How to Choose a Dining Table Size & Dimensions

The most important piece of the dining room puzzle? It's definitely the dining table. Choosing the right shape, size and style will help determine how you set up the rest of the space. From formal dining rooms to open-concept kitchen and dining areas and apartment-sized eat-in kitchens, choose the best dining table (plus chairs and storage) so you and your guests are seated and eating comfortably.

Take a count of how many seats you'll need regularly. A table too small could mean constantly bumping elbows, but a table too big can be unnecessarily roomy. You can find dining table sizes including:

Size Up Your Space

The size and shape of your dining table should be proportional to the size and shape of your dining space. There should be enough room to pull chairs in and out without bumping into the wall or other furniture, and for guests to walk and move around the table.

  • Leave about 36 inches of space from the wall to the table.
  • Ideally, 42-48 inches is the perfect clearance between the table and walls.
  • For an entryway or doorway, make sure the table is about 48 inches away.

As for dining table size, keep in mind:

  • Each person needs about 24 inches of table space to sit and eat comfortably.
  • The size of your place settings and serveware, plus any centerpieces or decor, will affect how wide of a table you'll need.
  • Remember, you can't plan for everything exactly, and your actual table measurements may vary a little bit by what you've measured out at home.

Rectangular or oval dining tables are especially fitting for long or narrow dining spaces, allowing for multiple seats along the length and single seats at either end. For a formal setting, consider matching chairs with traditional details. For a more casual vibe, mix and match chairs and benches for a unique seating combination.
