Starts strong but fades wrong - 3 out of 5

John Varvatos XX Elixir is a fragrance I wanted to love. On paper, it has a lot of the notes I usually enjoy. This fragrance has Bergamot, Ginger, and Davana up top; Geranium, Rum, and Black Iris in the middle; and a Leather, Cedarwood, and Tonka Bean base. The scent profile hits many of my favorite categories. This profile includes aromatic, fresh spicy, woody, leather, citrus, green, vanilla, powdery, animalic, and rum, so I expected it to be a solid win. The bottle itself is beautiful—sleek, dark, and very sophisticated-looking. The atomizer works great and gives an even spray, which I appreciate. Between that and the fragrance notes, you’re definitely getting your money’s worth. While I do wear it from time to time because I really enjoy that initial burst of scent, this one just isn’t a favorite of mine. The reason comes down to the dry down. As the fragrance wears throughout the day, the after notes start to shift in a way that doesn’t quite sit right with me. I think it’s just the overall fragrance profile not meshing well with my skin chemistry or personal taste. It’s not a bad scent by any means, just not one I find myself reaching for often. Because of that, I’d give John Varvatos XX Elixir a 3 out of 5. It smells great at first spray, but the way it wears down over time keeps it from being a go-to for me.
